Course Title: Portrait of the Artist as a Film Icon
Course Description: The lives of famous artists have long been considered ideal subjects for film biopics. Many great artists live tortured lives, which makes for good drama, but the best of these films can teach us something about the art itself as well as the people who create it. They explore the relationship between art and the viewer and the historical and political context in which artists work. The course will look at a number of films depicting the life and work of artists from different perspectives.

Course Title: Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond
Course Description: The Impressionists were an innovative and radical group of artists whose work took Paris by storm in the 1870s. The group included, from the beginning, women artists. Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond all exhibited at the Impressionist exhibitions while Eva Gonzalès, Manet’s muse, was an innovative artist in her own right. Yet how much do we know about them? What and how did they paint? What obstacles and prejudices did they face? This study day will explore these questions and many more. Sarah Burles is an accredited lecturer with The Art Society.
